Handkerchief

A friend of mine, Ernest, living a few houses away on my street gave this to me when we were in elementary school. His family, from Japan, moved to L.A. because of his father's work. I used to love hanging at their house because he had all this way cool AstroBoy stuff that wasn't available in the U.S. ... in fact nothing was available over here. The only way to get AB toys and comics, in those days, was to know someone who traveled to Japan. Lucky me had a really cool "Bachan" (grandma) who went to Japan to visit family relatives and brought back a whole bunch of AstroBoy "omiyage" (gifts). In the early 1960s, flying to Japan or anywhere overseas was a big deal. Like the handkerchief and gifts from my Bachan, I still have everything from my childhood. Well, almost..... I no longer have the 45rpm record that the Helms Bakery Truck was selling as a promotional item. The front side of the record had the AstroBoy theme song and the flip side had a "whistle" version of it. I'm still bummed that it's gone.....
